A fine Roman micromosaic table top. By Agostino Francescangeli, Rome. Dated 1831 Centered by a pair of winged putti astride a mythological beast driven chariot and hoarding the wares of the guards, surrounded by a oak-leaf border and rouge marble banding, signed OPUS AUGUSTINE FRANCESCANGELI ROMA/MDCCCXXXI 40 3/8 in.diameter A contemporary of renowned mosaicist Luigi Barberi, Francescangeli is recorded as being active in Rome during the first half of the 19th century and produced mosaics from a workshop located at via del Babuino in Rome. A similar micromosaic table-top dated 1810, also depicting a putto-driven chariot and attributed to Antonio Aguatti, is illustrated in J. Gabriel, The Gilbert Collection Micromosaics, London, 2000 p.77
