A Pair of French giltwood consoles. By Paul Sormani, Paris Late 19th Century. Each with a rectangular medous breccia top, above a serpentine pierced guilloche frieze, on paterae-headed cabriole legs joined by a ’X’-shaped stretcher centered with a raised foliate finial, the frames twice stamped SORMANI/PARIS 33 in. high, 59 in. wide, 22 in. deep. Operating from large premises at 114, rue du Temple and at 10, rue Charlot from 1867, Paul Sormani specialised in various ’meubles de luxe’ and gravitated toward reproductions of Louis XV and XVI revival styles. His works, which were exhibited at various exhibition were feted as "une qualite d’ execution de tout premier ordre". Upon his death in 1877, the firm was taken over by his widow, Ursule-Marie-Philippine Bouvaist, who was known as ’Veuve Sormani’ and was joined and later succeeded by her son.
