An Important and Monumental French Ormolu, Patinated Bronze Figural Pedestal Clock, Designed by Fredric-Eugne Piat, cast by Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie, Paris, Circa 1890.The upper section with a laurel and rose-garlanded lyre-shaped clock, the dial with indistinct inscription, the movement stamped LEMERLE CHARPENTIER/FNT DE BRONZES/PARIS/308, supported below by a scantily-clad nymph, leaning up against a laurel-hung and ram_s-mask-mounted tapering pedestal, and standing on a goatskin-draped spreading fluted base, flanked to each side by an acanthus-cast scrolled volute, on winged lion_s paw and volute feet. Literature: V. Champier, Le Musee F.-Eugene Piat, a Troyes, in Revue des Arts Decoratifs, no.15, 1894-5, pp.25-9 and no.17, 1897, p.402. On his death in 1903 after a career spanning some fifty years, the prominent French sculpteur-ornemaniste, Frdric-Eugne Piat, left a considerable body of work, principally designs and models for a vast array of clocks. The present clock, described as a "grande horloge Louis XVI, genre de La Fosse, bronze dor deux tons et bronze vert". At the Paris Exhibition Universelle of 1878, the bronziers Lemerle-Charpentier exhibited garnitures, vases, torcheres, and a large Louis XVI Style Clock, very similar to this clock.
