An incredible French white marble group, on a patinated-bronze-mounted Sienna, Jaune de Valence and grey-veined white marble pedestal. By Edouard Lanteri, London, Circa 1891. Titled: "The Duet". Representing two ladies in classical robes, singing from a songbook, seated on a ?D?-shaped chair with an Anthemion frieze, on a paw front feet, on a ?D?-front shaped base inscribed ED.LANTERI.SC 1891 to the right side, on a stepped spreading base.The group with the Sienna base: 31 1/2 in. high; 27 1/4 in. high; The pedestal: 47 in. high; 32 1/4 in. wide; 26 1/4 in. deep. Born in Burgundy in 1848, Edouard Lanteri (d. 1918) studied at The Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris before emigrating to London in 1872. He joined the staff of the Royal College of Art in 1874 and was a professor of sculpture from 1880 to 1910. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1876 and specialized in portrait busts, statuettes and genre groups.
